How Long Does a Robotic Lawn Mower Battery Last? (And What It Costs to Replace)

It's the number-one worry we hear before someone buys their first robotic mower: "That battery is going to die in a couple of years and cost a fortune to replace, right?"

It's a fair question — we've all watched a phone battery fall apart. But a robotic mower battery is a different animal, and once you see the actual numbers, most of that "battery anxiety" disappears. In this post we'll walk through how long these batteries really last, why yours will most likely outlive the rest of the mower, exactly what a replacement costs, and how to swap one yourself in about ten minutes.

How long does a robotic lawn mower battery last - We explain it in this video

How long a robotic mower battery actually lasts

Here's the figure that changes the whole conversation: Segway rates the Navimow pack at roughly 1,500 charge cycles before any meaningful capacity loss even begins. Not 1,500 cycles until it dies — 1,500 cycles until it starts to fade. After that, it follows a normal lithium-ion curve, gradually drifting down toward 80% capacity over many more cycles.

The key word is cycles, not years. A "cycle" is one full charge, and your mower only burns a cycle each time it runs the battery down and docks to recharge. So the real question isn't "how many years" — it's "how many recharges does my lawn actually demand?"

For a typical residential lawn, the answer is surprisingly few. A half-acre yard mowed a few times a week through the growing season only racks up somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 recharges a year. Do the math against a 1,500-cycle plateau and you're looking at a decade or more before the battery even begins to degrade — and many more years before it slips below 80%.

In other words, on most lawns the battery isn't the limiting factor. The wheels, blades, motors, and electronics will usually need attention long before the pack does.

Why "cycles" beats "years" — and why that's good news

Phone batteries feel disposable because we charge them every single day — that's 365 cycles a year, so they hit their fade point in two or three years. A robotic mower simply doesn't cycle that hard. It tops up, mows a little, tops up again, and spends a big chunk of the year parked for winter not cycling at all.

That low cycle count is exactly why a robot mower battery stretches across so many seasons. Light user? You may never replace it. Heavy user with multiple acres mowed daily? You'll get there sooner — but even then, you're amortizing the cost across thousands of cuts.

What a replacement battery costs

When the day finally comes, a new pack is a straightforward part — not a mystery dealer expense. Here are the current Navimow replacement battery prices (MSRP):

Model

Battery

Replacement (MSRP)

Navimow X315

6Ah

$220.79

Navimow X330

8Ah

$271.83

Navimow X350

10Ah

$394.53

Navimow X430 / X450

12.8Ah

$489.11

Terranox CM120M1

20Ah

$645.96

Terranox CM240M1

25Ah

$715.29

Prices are MSRP and subject to change — check with us for current pricing and availability.

Spread that across the life of the battery and the math gets friendly fast. On a typical lawn, a replacement pack works out to only a few dollars a month of "ownership" — and pennies per cut — by the time you'd actually need one.

Swapping the pack is genuinely a DIY job. You don't need to send the mower anywhere or wait on a service call — all it takes is a Torx bit and a few minutes. Here's the process (we show every step in the video at the top of this post):

  1. Power the mower off and take it off the charging dock. Never work on a powered-up mower, and let it sit if it's just finished a long run.

  2. Remove the access panel screws with the correct Torx bit (we show the exact size in the video). Keep the screws together so nothing wanders off.

  3. Locate the battery pack and find the wiring connector. Release the connector by pressing its retaining clip — pull on the connector body, never on the wires.

  4. Lift out the old pack and set the new one in place, making sure it seats the same way the original did.

  5. Reconnect the connector until it clicks home, then reinstall the panel and screws.

  6. Power up and charge fully before the next mow so the mower can recalibrate to the fresh pack.

A couple of safety notes: lithium packs don't like being punctured, shorted, or soaked, so handle the old one with care — and recycle it properly rather than tossing it in the trash. If anything looks swollen, damaged, or unfamiliar, stop and reach out to us.

Predict your own battery's lifespan and cost

Want to know what your lawn means for battery life? We built a free Robot Mower Battery Life Predictor that takes your lawn size, mowing schedule, and model, then projects how many recharges you'll need per season, how many years until the battery starts to fade, and your all-in running cost — battery plus electricity — right down to the cost per cut.

It covers the full Navimow lineup (plus Mammotion and Yarbo), so you can compare before you buy or plan ahead if you already own one.

Frequently asked questions

How many years will a robotic mower battery last? On a typical residential lawn, often a decade or more before it even begins to degrade, because the mower only uses around 150 charge cycles a year against a ~1,500-cycle plateau. Heavy, multi-acre use shortens that, but the battery still outlasts most other wear parts.

Can I replace a Navimow battery myself? Yes. With the mower powered off and the right Torx bit, you remove the access panel, disconnect the battery connector, swap the pack, and reassemble — about a ten-minute job.

How much is a Navimow replacement battery? Depending on the model, MSRP runs from about $220 for the X315 up to roughly $715 for the largest Terranox commercial pack. The popular X430/X450 12.8Ah pack is $489.11.

Do robot mower batteries degrade like phone batteries? Same lithium-ion chemistry, very different usage. Phones cycle daily; mowers cycle a fraction of that and rest all winter — so they reach their fade point years later.

What does "1,500 charge cycles" actually mean? It's the point at which capacity starts to drop, not when the battery dies. After 1,500 cycles the pack gradually works its way down toward 80% capacity over many additional cycles.
