How to Overseed Your Lawn This Fall With a Robot Mower

Fall is the best time of year to overseed a lawn in the Mid-Atlantic. If you own a robot mower, it can do a lot of the prep work for you. You just need to change a few settings and give the new grass room to grow.
Here's the exact process I'm using on my own lawn this fall, with the robot mower settings for each stage.

Why overseed in the fall?
Cool-season grasses like tall fescue germinate best when the soil is warm and the air is cool. That's September and October in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.
Weeds like crabgrass also die off with the first hard frost, so new seedlings don't have to compete with them. And the young grass gets months to build roots before summer heat returns.
Step-by-step: overseeding with a robot mower
Lower the cut height to about 2 inches. Let the robot mower run on its lowest setting for a few days. A short canopy lets sunlight and seed reach the soil.
Clear the clippings. A low cut leaves more debris than usual. Blow or rake it off so it doesn't smother the seed.
Dethatch. Rake or power-rake out the dead layer between the grass and soil so seed can touch dirt.
Core aerate. Pulling soil plugs relieves compaction and creates pockets for seed, water, and roots.
Spread seed and starter fertilizer. Use a quality tall fescue seed and a broadcast spreader. Walk it in two directions for even coverage.
Topdress lightly. A quarter inch of compost or quality topsoil holds moisture around the seed. I used mushroom topsoil from Kennett Square, PA.
Water daily. Keep the top layer of soil moist for the first two to three weeks until the seed sprouts.

Robot mower settings during renovation
Before seeding: lowest cut height (around 2 inches), mowing daily for a few days.
Right after seeding: pause the mower or set the seeded area as a no-go or exclusion zone in the app.
First cut: once new grass reaches about 3 to 4 inches, bring the mower back at its highest height.
After that: lower the height gradually to your normal setting, around 3 to 3.5 inches for tall fescue.
Most robot mower apps let you pause a zone or draw a temporary no-go area without remapping the whole lawn. If you're not sure how on your model, give us a call and we'll walk you through it.
Common mistakes to avoid
Letting the mower run over new seed. The wheels and blades can pull up tender seedlings. Keep it off until the grass is established.
Leaving heavy clippings on the soil. They block seed-to-soil contact.
Skipping water. Seed that dries out after it sprouts usually dies.
Seeding too late. Aim to finish by mid-October in most of our service area so seedlings establish before frost.

Does the robot mower help the new lawn long term?
Yes. Once the grass is established, daily mowing keeps it at a consistent height, which encourages thicker growth. The tiny clippings break down quickly and return nitrogen to the soil, so you get a light feeding every day.
Daily mowing also keeps weeds from getting tall enough to seed. It won't fix a bad lawn on its own, but it's a great partner for one you're rebuilding.
