Robot Mower Losing Signal? How We Fixed Weak RTK and Cellular With a WiFi Extender in a Shed

Not every property is friendly to a robotic mower. Some yards have thick tree canopy that blocks satellite signal. Some are in cellular dead zones. And once in a while, we get a property that has both.

That was the case on a recent Segway Navimow install. We couldn't get a dependable RTK fix and we couldn't get reliable cellular, which meant the mower was constantly dropping its connection. Rather than tell the customer their yard wasn't a fit, we solved it with something most people don't think of for a lawn problem: a WiFi extender mounted on a backyard shed.

The problem: two signals, both unreliable

Navimow (and most modern robotic mowers) depend on two things staying alive:

  1. Positioning — the mower needs to know where it is. That comes from RTK satellite corrections, either via a physical RTK base station on the property or through NetRTK, where correction data is delivered over the internet.

  2. Connectivity — the mower needs a data connection for NetRTK corrections, app control, mapping, firmware updates, and status reporting. That's normally cellular (the built-in 4G) or WiFi.

On this property, the tree cover made the RTK base station's satellite view marginal, and the cellular signal was one bar on a good day. When either link drops, the mower pauses, throws errors, or heads back to the dock. The customer was getting a lot of "lost connection" notifications and not a lot of mowing.

How to extend your NetRTK Signal

The fix: strong WiFi from a shed

The property had one thing going for it: a shed near the lawn with power and one to two bars of WiFi reaching it from the house.

That's all we needed.

We installed a WAVLINK AX1800 outdoor WiFi extender on the exterior of the shed, running in repeater mode. It grabs the weak home signal, then rebroadcasts a strong 2.4GHz network across the entire lawn and down the driveway to the far edge of the mowing area. With a solid WiFi connection, the mower pulls NetRTK correction data over the internet reliably, so it's no longer at the mercy of a marginal satellite base station or a weak cell tower.

Result: no more dropouts, and the mower finished its map and started mowing on schedule.

What we used

WAVLINK AX1800 Outdoor WiFi Extender (around $160)

  • Dual-band WiFi 6, with four 8dBi omnidirectional antennas

  • IP67 weatherproof housing — it can live outside on a shed wall year-round

  • Powered by PoE, so a single cable to the shed's power handles it

  • Supports repeater, access point, and mesh modes

Real-world range on the 2.4GHz band was around 250–300 feet with clear line of sight, which covered this property comfortably. The box claims much more than that, but trees, fences, and terrain all eat into it, so plan conservatively.

Setup details that actually matter

If you try this yourself, three things will make or break it:

1. Give the extender its own network name. In repeater mode, the WAVLINK defaults to broadcasting your home network name with an EXT suffix (for example, HomeWiFiEXT2.4) using the same password. Leave it that way. If you clone the exact same name as your home router, the mower sees one big network and may cling to the weak house signal instead of the strong shed signal. A separate name means you connect the mower to the shed network once and it stays there.

2. Use the 2.4GHz band. Navimow's WiFi radio is 2.4GHz only. It also happens to be the band that reaches farthest and punches through shed walls and foliage best, so this works in your favor.

3. The setup has to happen on-site. The repeater wizard needs to scan for and join the customer's home WiFi, so you can't fully preconfigure it at the shop. Do the firmware update and set the admin password ahead of time, then finish the pairing at the property. Get the homeowner's WiFi password before you show up.

When this approach makes sense

A shed WiFi extender is the right call when:

  • The mowing area has heavy tree cover that hurts RTK reception

  • Cellular coverage on the property is weak or inconsistent

  • There's an outbuilding (shed, garage, pool house, barn) with power somewhere near the lawn

  • At least a faint home WiFi signal reaches that building

If there's no power near the lawn, or no WiFi reaching the outbuilding at all, you're looking at a different solution, like running conduit, a point-to-point wireless bridge, or relocating the RTK base station.

The bigger picture

This is the part of robotic mower installation that a box store can't help you with. The mower itself is only half the job. The other half is reading the property, understanding where the signals come from, and knowing which piece of gear solves which problem. Sometimes that's a taller RTK mast. Sometimes it's a second base station. And sometimes it's a WiFi extender on a shed.
