We Keep Replacing Customers' Chargers. Here's Why (Robot Mower Charging Station Fix)

Robotic mowers do almost all of the work in your yard. There's one spot they can't reach, though: the ring of grass right around their own charging station. Grab a weed whacker to clean it up, and one pass too close can shred the power or antenna cable.

We've replaced enough customer chargers to know this is the most common way robot mower owners damage their setup. The good news is that it's easy to prevent. Here are two simple ways to set up your charging station so you never have to trim around it again.

Why the Area Around the Charger Is a Problem

  • The mower can't cut tight around its own dock, so a strip of tall grass grows there.

  • Homeowners reach for the string trimmer to tidy it up.

  • The charger's power and antenna cables run right through that same strip.

  • One slip cuts a cable, leaving you with a dead charger, a mower that can't dock, and a service call.

The fix is to make sure nothing grows around the station in the first place.

Navimow mower with turf pad to prevent weeds at charging station

Option 1: Put Your Charging Station on a Turf Pad

This is our favorite solution. It's quick, it looks clean, and it works anywhere in the lawn.

  1. Get a roll of artificial turf and cut a piece about 3' × 3'.

  2. Bury the charger's cables first so nothing is exposed.

  3. Cut a small slit in the turf so the cable comes up right at the station.

  4. Lay the turf down, pin or stake the corners, and set the charging station on top.

The turf mats down the grass underneath and smothers it, so nothing grows back. You get the greenest-looking patch in the yard and nothing to trim.

Pro tips: keep the entry side flat and flush so the mower drives on smoothly, and leave a straight approach path into the dock. Ripples or a lip at the edge can interfere with docking.

Charging Station can be installed at Mulch bed area

Option 2: Install the Station in a Mulch Bed

If you have a large mulch bed next to the lawn, you can carve out a pocket for the charging station. Mulch suppresses grass the same way the turf does.

  • Dig out the area, then level it and pack it firm so the station sits stable.

  • Bury the cables under the mulch line.

  • Keep a firm, mulch-free entry lane so the wheels don't spin and mulch doesn't get kicked onto the charging contacts.

This option takes more work than the turf pad, but it blends right into your existing landscaping.

Turf vs. Mulch: Which Should You Choose?

  • Turf pad: fast to install, clean look, works anywhere in the lawn.

  • Mulch bed: blends into landscaping, takes more labor, and needs a bed near the mowing area.
